mitchell & beyond!!!

Tonight, Jenn, Althea (Diego would not want to come…) and I will travel to Mount Mitchell State Park to be ready to start our hike to climb 6 9 peaks on the South Beyond 6000 list (SB6K).  We will meet up with Andrew, Karen, Chad and Stephanie tomorrow morning to start the hike.

First, we will head south to climb Mount Hallback (6320 feet) then on to Mount Gibbes (6560 feet).  From there we will return to Mount Mitchell State Park to eat lunch.  After lunch, we will head north on the Black Mountain Crest Trail to visit the peaks of Mount Mitchell (6684 feet), Mount Craig (6647 feet), Balsam Cone (6611 feet), & Potato Hill (6475 feet).  After we summit Potato Hill we will arrive at camp for the night.  We will camp at Deep Gap, where we hope to find a water source.

Sunday morning we will set out for more peaks on the trail which will include Winter Star Mountain (6212 feet), Gibbs Mountain (6224 feet), & Celo Knob (6327 feet).  We will return to Deep Gap to camp again on Sunday night.

Monday morning we will return to the parking area and make our way back home.  I am sure it will be a fun and exhausting weekend, but I am so excited to be taking Jenn on her first backpacking trip!  I hope it is a great one and she will get hooked like the rest of us!

If we have views anywhere close to this, I will be happy!

April Fools

Today is April 1st, 2010 and I am stuck at work.  This weekend should be nice, as I have a holiday tomorrow for Good Friday and Jenn, the girls, our dogs and I are all going to our in law’s cabin in the NC mountains.

I plan to get a couple of runs in over the weekend as well as a little hiking.  My training as of late has been lacking and I need to get it in gear with a half marathon coming up next weekend.  I was able to get some miles on the bike last weekend and I will try my best to ride to work and home some next week.  With my first triathlon coming up in a little more than a month, I need to get bike time in.  Is it bad that I haven’t been for a swim in 6 months!?

I hope this isn't me at Tri the Rock!

Another Very Early Morning

I couldn’t sleep well last night.

Perhaps it was the lack of exercise for three days in a row after the triathlon last weekend that had my feet itching or perhaps it may have been my excitement stemming from committing to run the easy leg of the Blue Ridge Relay with Alex and 4 other runners.  It is a 208 mile race that will take 30 hours or so to complete.  And I say easy leg because I don’t think I could do the harder legs.  My leg will consist of 6 different runs over the 30 hour timeframe that will total more than 25 miles.  Call me crazy, but I can’t wait.  It is also the weekend before a triathlon I already have scheduled, so it should be an interesting couple of weeks.

So at around 2:45 this morning, I woke up and could not get back to sleep.  I tried, but when I decided it wasn’t going to happen, what else is a guy to do but run?

I fiddled with my IPod a bit to get it to work, but failed.  I think the battery is having some issues.  Oh well.  So I loaded the last Podcast of the Freeway to 10K mix onto Jenn’s IPod and got dressed.  I leashed up Althea, let Diego come in the house so he could do something special too and set out.

The temperature was comfortable in the dark morning and I was feeling good.  Traffic was very light so there were no issues with the cars.  I did a sort of out and back for a total of 7.1 miles.  I was very pleased with my pace of 9:24 minutes per mile.  See the stats here.

On the cool down walk back to the house I suddenly realized something was wrong.  MY NIPPLES ARE ON FIRE!  I have heard guys talk about running marathons with band aids on their nipples to keep them from chaffing, but I didn’t realize it could happen after just 7 miles.  But it did.  I feel like I have sort of graduated the next step in my running career now that I have sore nipples.  Today it has been a sort of reminder that I went the distance this morning.  I was lucky enough to not have a severe case; I have heard they can get so bad they bleed.  I have nothing like that and I don’t want to know what that feels like.  I will plan to use some Aquaphor (thanks Jeff!) or something before I go out running in the future!

Very Early Morning

After a day off yesterday, apparently my body was ready to get moving.  At around 2:45 this morning, I was wide awake.  I had planned on waking up at 4:30 and then go for a run, back home to shower then bike to work.  I stayed in bed trying to get back to sleep and realized a little after 3:00 that it wasn’t going to work.  I decided I had three options: stay in bed awake, watch some TV or go ahead for the run.  I guess the inner triathlete in me said, “RUN!”  So I did.

I took my time (I had plenty after all!) going to the bathroom, getting dressed and stretching.  I leashed up Althea, said goodbye to Diego and we were off.  I had to run without the IPod this morning as I wanted to, due to some kind of glitch with it.  I think the battery is dead.  Melissa and I have debated several times over whether or not running with music or running without so you can hear the birds, your breathing, etc. is better.  I probably would have always run with music except that it is illegal in competition at triathlons.  Once I started running without, I realized there are some benefits, but I do still enjoy the music especially when all I expected to hear at 4:00 AM was the occasional car and barking dogs.

We ended up running to the Peach Stand (if you know Fort Mill, you should know where that is) and back.  Total mileage was 6.2 miles.  I did it at a steady pace of just over 10 minute miles and it felt good.

The only issues I had again related to the lack of sidewalks along Doby’s Bridge Rd.  It must have been a new moon for where there were no street lights or cars around I could not see a thing.  Add to that a car coming at me with its bright lights on and I was perfectly blinded.  I felt like that deer must feel when it encounters such a car.  Add more to that a roadway that has no shoulder whatsoever and a 4 inch drop from the asphalt to the dirt and you have me running down the road with a car coming (I got over a bit in case they weren’t paying attention) and I drop off the edge.  I rolled my left ankle a good bit, but luckily I didn’t hurt anything.  I yelled out a few choice words regarding the lack of sidewalks and I hope there were no kids awake around that area.  I need to see what it would take for the city to put some in.  Anybody have any ideas?

Here are the stats.

I got back home a little after 5:00 and just took my time cooling off and cleaning up.  I showered, went to the bathroom again and got dressed for the ride to work.

The ride in was uneventful, thankfully, and the weather was actually quite nice.  I will add more on the ride home, including the usual stats as well at a later time.

It’s too bad I have to work late tonight or this would be shaping up to be a perfect day!

Happy Father’s Day

I had every reason to skip my workouts this weekend.  Yesterday, I travelled to Greenville, SC with Mia, my Dad and Melissa to visit Jenny and Chuck.  We left pretty much first thing in the morning and I let Jenn get a run in before we left.  Melissa and I had tentatively planned to run while we were in Greenville, but the temperature was to flirt with 100 degrees and it would be the hottest part of the day when we would have had time to run – nap time.  Plus, Chuck had said he wanted to get a round of disc golf in with me and after not playing for several months, I was looking forward to that.

We ended up going to play the game of disc golf since it was so hot.  It was a lot of fun and I shot 12 over and Chuck (semi-professional if you ask me) shot 6 under.  Now you may say 12 over is really bad, but I haven’t thrown a disc in 3 months and even then I usually was happy with bogey golf, or 18 over playing 18 holes.  So I was pleased with a 12 over score, especially since this is rated an “intermediate-advanced level course” and a “difficult par 54″ on the PDGA website.  We played at Century Park Disc Golf Course in Greer, SC.  I greatly enjoyed the course and would recommend it to anyone in the area.

Mia and I didn’t get back home until about 7:00, just in time to see Sadie before she went to bed.  We couldn’t get Mia to sleep until a little after 9:oo as she was wound up from the busy day.  I was too tired after all of that to do anything but sit and watch some TV.

Jenn had to work 12 hours on Sunday, so she went to bed early.  I stayed up just a little bit and watched some of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, as aired on PBS a few months ago.  I decided that I would wake up early enough to get a run in before Jenn had to leave for work at 6:00.  This meant I had to wake up at 4:45 at the latest to do that.  I wanted to run 6 miles and knew that I would need at least 1:15 to get ready and run that distance.  So I went to bed.

I woke up at about 4:50 and threw on clothes, stretched, went to the bathroom and leashed up Althea.  We told Diego goodbye and we headed out.  I decided that since there was not much traffic at 5:00 on Sunday morning that we would run down the normally busy road that has no sidewalks (seriously, come on Town of Fort Mill, get with the program and put sidewalks and bike lanes in!) and run through the town.  It seems that the majority of cars that are out this early on Sundays are police officers.  At least I could wave one down if I had a problem!

We turned around at about 5:30 because I knew I had to be back by 6:00 so Jenn could leave for work.  This cut the distance to 5 miles, but it still felt great and around mile 4 I felt the “runner’s high” but it didn’t last very long.  Those of you that have run a good bit probably know what I am talking about.  It is kind of a fuzzy feeling, but I like the feeling and I take it as my body’s way of saying, “thanks for all the exercise, now I can live a little longer!”

Here are the stats as recorded by the Forerunner GPS.

Now I get to enjoy my Father’s Day with my two girls.  I only wish that I didn’t have to work tomorrow and that Jenn could spend the day with us too.  Oh well, not everything is perfect, but it is close.

Another Humid Morning

I was able to force myself out of bed at 5:00 again this morning.  I was disappointed in this because I needed to get up no later than 4:45 to get the run in that I wanted to.  My wife had to leave the house for work at 5:55, so I needed to be back home by then in case the girls woke up.

I did my usual routine: toilet, clothes, shoes, stretch.  Then I went to see the dogs and let Diego in the house and got the leash on Althea.  This always takes longer than you would think.  After a 5 minute warm up walk, I started running at 5:31.  This meant it was going to be a shorter run than I wanted.  So I decided to try to run a fast pace.

The idea was all well and good, but then I started to think about the weather man I heard on TV while I was stretching.  “It is already warm at 71 degrees and it is much more humid than this time yesterday.  When you walk outside this morning it will be like a slap in the face.”  I thought, “shit, just what I need!”

So I decided to do the best with what I had and I ran 2.35 miles in about 21 minutes.  That comes to a pace of 8:57/mile.  Not a bad pace, but certainly not my best.  You can see all the stats here.

I will attempt the swim at 5:30 tomorrow morning and then bike to/from work.  I am looking forward to that.  This Saturday Mia and I are traveling with my dad and Melissa to see our sister, Jenny, and her husband, Chuck.  I am super excited about this because I haven’t seen my dad in quite some time (my parents live in Dallas, TX) and it has been several weeks since I have seen Jenny and Chuck.

Jenny is 8 months pregnant and completed her first marathon with Chuck last December (while she was pregnant by the way).  We ran in a race together with Melissa and although she was pregnant she still smoked us.  See Melissa’s blog post about that race here.  I wonder if I could beat her now?  She is the one who used to trick me into exercising with her when we were kids.  “Come on, race me!  I will give you a head start and a sticker when we finish!”  She would still beat me and I think you owe me some stickers Jenny.  It wasn’t until high school when I started running track that I could beat her at a short sprint.  By this time she was running much farther than me, but I have to hold on to something, right?  Maybe we can run a marathon (or at least the Cooper River Bridge run 10K) together next year and I can see how far I’ve come.  Melissa, Jenny how about a little sibling rivalry next year?

Humid (Sweaty) Run

I was able to drag myself out of bed at 5:15 this morning and went for a run.  I put the leash on Althea and told Diego we would be back soon.  I ran out of the neighborhood, down the half mile long sidewalk (why are there not more sidewalks?) and then ran back into the neighborhood.  My wife ran into a nearby subdivision and she said it was nice with a little hill, so I decided to see what it was about.  It was a simple neighborhood with huge houses.  There were no sidewalks there, but at this hour it was not busy with cars.  We did pass a guy walking his dog with no leash and I grew worried, but the dog didn’t seem to even notice us.  Either that or he (10 pounds of dog, if that) didn’t want anything to do with my 70 pound German Shepherd/Husky mix.

We finished the run by heading back into my neighborhood and took a nice 1 mile or so cool down walk.  This is about the time I realize that my shirt was completely soaked with sweat.  I had noticed that I had to keep wiping my brow to keep the sweat out of my eyes, but I thought that was because I decided to leave my hat at home.  Apparently it was close to 100% humidity and I could tell now.

After a near hit with someone backing out of their driveway and not paying attention to the guy walking his dog, we just headed back home.  Another 3.1 miles down.  I will add the stats at a later time as apparently Garmin is having some issues with their system.  Here it is.

I will try to get a swim in sometime, but it is hard as always because I have to work late tonight :( and tomorrow my wife is working 12 hours.  I will play it by ear.

Good (But Early) Morning

My wife had to go back to work this morning and she had to leave the house at 5:50.  This meant if I wanted to get a run in, I had to be out the door running at 5:15.  I decided to not watch the Yankees game last night.  It’s okay anyway because they lost to Boston again.  I will watch tonight’s game on MLBN.

I set the alarm for 4:35 and finally got out of bed at about 4:50.  I spent time going to the bathroom so I didn’t repeat Tuesday’s run, did some stretching, took my vitamins with some water, ate some Espresso Hammer Gel and put the leash on Althea and let Diego into the house while we were gone.

The temperature was nice at about 65 degrees, but it was humid.  I felt really good on the run and noticed a nice change – my breathing was much less labored than I have grown accustomed to.  I was able to take nice deep breaths during the run and didn’t feel the need to walk the entire time.  This also most likely contributed to a lower average heart rate.  It averaged at 160 bpm.  Usually it is over 170 bpm.  This was certainly a confidence booster for the 10K race this Saturday.

I returned home exactly at 5:50, so I cut it close, but Jenn was able to leave on time and now I could relax and I took my time getting ready for work.

Check out the stats as recorded on the Garmin.

Next up, I will attempt to find a time to swim in the next few days.  It may end up being on Saturday when the girls will be napping.  Maybe I will go to Melissa’s neighborhood and swim in her pool since it is open now.  She has been asking me to show her a few things about swimming, so that might just work out.  Also, I want to fin more days that I can bike to work.  Aside from the close encounter with the deer, it was just too cool!

Watch Out For That Tree!

I have not written anything for several days, but I have good reason.  Last week my training was only so-so, but I had a blast at the ASC Greenway Trail Run.

The morning started off well, I woke up, showered and stretched a little.  I went downstairs, got some water and took my vitamins.  Fed the dogs and apologized to Althea that she couldn’t come with me.  Diego said never mind, I’ll stay here.  I left the house before anyone else was awake, so it was a calm and quiet morning.

I drove to the race site, about 10 minutes, and got there at about 6:35.  The half marathon race planned to start at 7:30, and my race, the 5 miler, to start at 7:40.  I picked up my packet which turns out to be nothing more than a number, which was disappointing, but for only $10, what could I expect?  And apparently $5 goes to the ASC Greenway.  I was not too bummed.  How many race tees do you really need?

I realized that I am very early and there is not much to do to get ready since things are so simple, so I took a walk to warm up.  I walked down to the lake to take in the beauty of the morning.  I then realized that the running route will take us along the lake.  Should be pretty.  I decided to follow the trail to see the condition of the trails as it has been raining all week.  The trails here really weren’t too bad, but I was concerned because I had read that some were on horse trails.  I got about 20 feet into the woods and I was hammered by spider webs!  Good thing I won’t be first!  I made a good loop around and back to the registration area to see what was going on.  More people are showing up and I look for anyone I know.  I didn’t see anyone at all that I know.  I figured I would have seen someone I know, but oh well.

I stood around for a while then decided I should go pee one last time (about 7:15 now).  I went to the bathhouse and there was a long line!  Well, it looked like a woods pee for me.  So I followed an empty trail until no one can see me and I went.  At about 7:25 they gathered the half marathoners to the starting line.  I can’t tell a lie, a part of me wanted to be in that group.  But, I was to be satisfied with 5 miles today.

They fired the gun for the half marathon group precisely at 7:30.  But not before warning the group that there is a creek crossing about .25 miles down the trail.  They told them that there is a swinging bridge for those who would like to postpone getting their feet wet by running through the creek, but if they crossed on the bridge they were to walk for safety reasons.  I started to wonder if we were going the same way and which way I would go if we were.

At about 7:35 they gathered the 5 milers.  They told us the same thing and the creek crossing.  I could not decide what to do.  I finally decided that I would just see what it looks like when I got there.  But I knew what creek they were talking about and I knew that it could run pretty high after rains like we had.  I did some last minute stretching and ate some Hammer Gel.

Promptly at 7:40, they fired the gun for us.  Off we were.  The pace started off pretty slow like it does in most races with a group of people, but this was relatively small, with only 92 runners.  Pretty soon I settled into my pace.  Then the creek came into view.  It was running pretty high as I expected, but people are running through it.  Then I looked at the bridge.  There was a line of people that were stopped waiting to get on!  I said to myself, “Screw it!” and ran through the creek.  It was about 10 to 15 feet to the other side and about 2 ½ feet deep in the middle.  At that point I was having fun.  My legs were wet from my thighs down and I was making a squishy sound with every step, but I didn’t care.  It was fun!

Now we made our way down a gravel road by some horse and goat fields and it was still a beautiful morning.  I said hello to the goats that were staring at us like we were crazy.  Perhaps we were.

We crossed a highway where they had people stationed to stop the cars, but it was not busy at all.  After that, we ran through a field and back into the woods.  Now we were on a mountain bike trail and one I knew well.  We had a gentle downhill at first, but I knew we would be coming back up.  We passed by the first water station and I keep going.  I had my water belt with HEED in, so I was good.  I took the cue and pulled out the bottle and took a few sips, but I was able to continue to run.  I passed a few people that way.

Then I settled into a real nice pace.  I was feeling great and enjoying the woods in the morning.  It made me wonder why I don’t do more runs on the trails.  Then we came to where the half marathon trail and the 5 mile trail split up.  There were people stationed there to help us out.  We crossed over a swinging bridge and were now on a horse trail.  I have always hated hiking on the horse trails.  Were you are not dodging shit, the trails are so muddy that it makes it no fun.  The conditions today were no different.  In several spots, I had to jump over mud puddles or found myself slipping around in muddy areas.  I think I even splashed a girl that was running behind me although I didn’t realize it at first.  I heard her yell, “Oh yuck!” and I looked back, but for some reason I thought she splashed herself, but thinking about it afterward, I must have splashed her, because it hit her in the face and I don’t think that would be possible from your own feet when you are running forward.  Sorry about that!  I think she had good spirits about it though.

At one point, I was avoiding a muddy spot by running along the edge of the trail.  I must have been looking down and looked up just in time to catch a pine branch to the face.  Ouch.  I could tell that something had hit me in the right eye, but it just stung a little.  I kept running and a few minutes later, it was fine.

I went on to finish strong.  I was able to sprint past a few people at the end and finished with a time of 48:16, with a pace of 9:40/mile.  That was a little slower than my normal race pace, but this was not a normal race!  I finished 40th out of the 92 that ran and I actually placed 2nd in my age group.  Okay, there were only 3 runners in my age group, but I wasn’t last!

I went to my car and drank my Recoverite and did some stretching.  I walked back over to the finish area to see some others come through the finish line.  Most had finished by now, so I walked down to the lake again to see the half marathoners come through.  I waited for about 20 minutes and I saw them on the other side of the lake.  About 10 minutes later they came through.  The lead pack included two men and one woman.  About a minute behind them another guy runs past.  I walked back up to the finish line to see how they finish.  A minute later, they came into sight.  The woman is in the lead!  You go girl!  She finished in 1:41:13 with a pace of 7:44.  I thought that was pretty impressive.

A couple of hours after I got home, I realized there was a problem.  I could not keep my right eye open and it kept getting worse!  It was very, very painful and extremely sensitive to light.  I finally got Jenn (only at her urging though) to take me to urgent care and they dyed my eye and looked at it with a special light.  I had a corneal abrasion directly in the center of my pupil.  I could not sleep at all on Saturday night and I could barely keep my eyes open on Sunday even with all the blinds closed and sunglasses on.  I had to go to work on Monday and sat in my office with sunglasses on and was still pretty painful to look at the computer screen.

Tuesday everything was much better and I think my eye will make a full recovery.  But remember, watch out for that tree!

Some Dogs Just Want to Stay Home

I travelled with my wife, Jenn and our two daughters, Mia and Sadie, to my in laws mountain house in Saluda, NC this weekend.  We decided to take our two dogs, Diego and Althea along with us so they could enjoy the trip as well.

We travelled on Friday and on Saturday morning, I decided to get a training run in to stay active and get some hill work in that I knew would be challenging, but beneficial.  I knew I would take Althea who accompanied me on my first attempt at half marathon distance.  I am sure she would have kept going if I had.  I decided at the last minute to take Diego as well so he would not feel left out.

Well, we started with a 5 minute warm up walk at a brisk pace.  Then when I started to run things were going well, that is for 3 minutes.  Then, all of a sudden, I have Althea on my left, pulling me forward and Diego on my right, pulling me backward!  I stopped to check to make sure he wasn’t hurt.  He wasn’t.  We walked for a bit and I tried running again.  Immediately, he started pulling me back again!  Not wanting to hurt him, we walked the rest of the way home and I decided that if it’s going to be more of a walk, Diego would rather just stay home.  And that’s okay.  Althea loves to run and I love to take her because it makes her a better dog at home.  Diego doesn’t have that problem, so the occasional walk seems to be just fine for him.

You can see the stats here, but don’t expect to be impressed!
