report from mitchell & beyond

When a trip starts off with blue lights, things could get interesting…

Friday:

Jenn called to tell me that she unfortunately would not be able to join us on the trip.  She was sick.  Huge bummer!  She told me that she still wanted me to go and have fun, so I decided to stay with her Friday night and head up with Althea on Saturday morning.

Saturday:

I left the house about 10 til 5:00, about 5 minutes late.  I was to meet Andrew (who was driving Karen, Chad and Stephanie) at some point on I-485.  I called him to let him know that I was a little behind, and after a little chastising from Andrew, he told me he would stop along the shoulder of the exit for Tryon and I would flash my light when I saw him.  Well, the boys in blue beat me to him.  When I arrived, there were blue lights ablaze, so of course, I did not stop and let Andrew deal with that.  I got off onto Tryon and figured once Andrew got out of jail, he would give me a call.  Just kidding no jail time, but they were most interested why someone was stopped on the shoulder at 5 AM on Saturday.

After the excitement, we headed on.

We decided to stop at Waffle House along the way, of course.

We arrived at Mount Mitchell State Park parking lot about 30 minutes late of schedule, but not too bad.  We decided to summit Mount Mitchell first since the clouds were all low in the valley and there was a good view.  Also, there were very few people on the summit at this early hour.  1 down, 8 to go.

Next, we headed south to summit Mount Hallback.  This consisted of a bushwhack through relatively thick forest up a fairly steep hill about a 1/4 mile off of the trail.  There happened to be a sign (albeit a little loosely anchored) to mark the summit.  2 down, 7 to go.

After we returned to the trail, we continued on where we hiked past the first gate to the park, a few miles from the summit of Mount Mitchell.  We could tell at this time that the park we getting very busy as the weather was still nice on a Saturday of a holiday weekend.  Several motorcyclists were riding on the scenic roadway.

From there we hiked up a long gravel roadway that led us near to the summit of Mount Gibbes.  This was a slight bushwhack that took us near some very creepy buildings (some abandoned) that apparently were used at times by NC State University.  We found the summit that was not marked, but we are certain we were there.  Snapped some pictures and headed back to the parking area.  3 down, 6 to go.

Along this stretch, Karen, Andrew’s wife, let us know that her knees had been bothering her a good bit all day.  The terrain we were covering is very technical, especially for someone that has had a couple of surgeries and zero cartilage in one knee.  By the time we got back to the cars, we all needed a break.

We ate lunch and rested up before packing our overnight packs to head in the opposite direction towards Deep Gap for the night.  We got about 1/2 mile in and Karen was not doing well.  We could all tell she was in a lot of pain and we decided it would be wise to turn around before it got worse.  The last thing anyone wants is for someone to be 4.5 miles into the back country unable to walk.

We headed back to the cars and decided to still camp in the area so we set out to find a place.

All of the campgrounds we came to were full.  Apparently we weren’t the only people who decided to go camping in the area for the long weekend.  We finally came to a trail head where, after hiking along the trail for about a 1/4 mile, we found a decent place to make camp.  We headed to the cars, packed what we needed for the night and returned to set up.

We got a fire going and made dinner and told stories for a while before turning in.

The next morning we took it easy for a while before breaking camp.  Little else happened, but we did stop to eat at Sonic (since Zaxby’s wasn’t open yet) before heading for home.

All in all a great trip, but we will be back for the remaining 6 peaks!  Get well soon Karen!

P.S. The special places ended up being in restrooms, so nothing to note on that here.

mitchell & beyond!!!

Tonight, Jenn, Althea (Diego would not want to come…) and I will travel to Mount Mitchell State Park to be ready to start our hike to climb 6 9 peaks on the South Beyond 6000 list (SB6K).  We will meet up with Andrew, Karen, Chad and Stephanie tomorrow morning to start the hike.

First, we will head south to climb Mount Hallback (6320 feet) then on to Mount Gibbes (6560 feet).  From there we will return to Mount Mitchell State Park to eat lunch.  After lunch, we will head north on the Black Mountain Crest Trail to visit the peaks of Mount Mitchell (6684 feet), Mount Craig (6647 feet), Balsam Cone (6611 feet), & Potato Hill (6475 feet).  After we summit Potato Hill we will arrive at camp for the night.  We will camp at Deep Gap, where we hope to find a water source.

Sunday morning we will set out for more peaks on the trail which will include Winter Star Mountain (6212 feet), Gibbs Mountain (6224 feet), & Celo Knob (6327 feet).  We will return to Deep Gap to camp again on Sunday night.

Monday morning we will return to the parking area and make our way back home.  I am sure it will be a fun and exhausting weekend, but I am so excited to be taking Jenn on her first backpacking trip!  I hope it is a great one and she will get hooked like the rest of us!

If we have views anywhere close to this, I will be happy!

April Fools

Today is April 1st, 2010 and I am stuck at work.  This weekend should be nice, as I have a holiday tomorrow for Good Friday and Jenn, the girls, our dogs and I are all going to our in law’s cabin in the NC mountains.

I plan to get a couple of runs in over the weekend as well as a little hiking.  My training as of late has been lacking and I need to get it in gear with a half marathon coming up next weekend.  I was able to get some miles on the bike last weekend and I will try my best to ride to work and home some next week.  With my first triathlon coming up in a little more than a month, I need to get bike time in.  Is it bad that I haven’t been for a swim in 6 months!?

I hope this isn't me at Tri the Rock!

4 days to go!

ENOWith only 4 days until we set out for Roan Mountain, things are coming together.  Final plan is to meet up with Melissa, and she, Althea and I will drive up to the trail head on Friday night.  Andrew and his crew will meet us Saturday morning and we will start hiking no later than 6:30.  I got most of my things packed over the weekend and if I can keep Mia and Sadie from rummaging through my pack, I should have everything I need!

a new look at training

Last year, when I started swimming, biking and running, training for triathlons and running events, those three activities were all I really had time for.  This year, I am going to try something different and include fitness exercises on a regular basis to tone muscles not necessarily used directly in each of those activities.  The goal here is to advance my overall fitness and abilities.

One way I plan to do this is with the help, yet again, of the Wii.  You may remember that the Wii initially motivated me to become healthier and lose weight with Wii Fit.  This year, with the recommendation of my friend, Andrew, I will use Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2010.  I am on my first week of the program, but it appears to really whip you into shape.  the workouts are intense circuit style and last nights consisted of:

  • Running (in place) ~5.5 minutes
  • 25 push-ups
  • 20 back kicks (1 rep consists of kicking leg straight back and “punching” with both arms then repeat with other leg)
  • 20 sledge swings (1 rep consists of swinging the Wii remote like you would a sledge hammer on one side of your body then repeat on other side)
  • 25 water pumps (holding Wii remote with both hands at your chin then squatting down bringing remote almost to the floor then back up)
  • 20 boat poses (half sit-up at the same time bringing both legs up to form a “V” with your body)
  • Quick stretching (knees to chest while laying on the floor)
  • Running ~5.5 minutes
  • 25 push-ups
  • 40 sledge swings
  • 20 back kicks
  • 25 water pumps
  • 30 sledge swings

Jillian Michaels

This all left me completely exhausted, especially after running a little over 2 miles at lunch yesterday.  I will continue the 2-3 runs during the week and a long run on the weekends.  I will also try to cycle to work and home when the weather permits.  As long as I can get to the pool or lake, I should be set for the triathlon season fast approaching!

I have a hiking trip with Andrew and others coming up on 3/20/10 in the Roan Mountain Highlands.  I will certainly keep you posted on that with (I hope) wonderful pictures from the trip.  I am also looking forward to taking Althea along on the trip as well!

I look forward to what this training will add to my abilities.  And with a trainer that looks like that, how can you resist?

Another Very Early Morning

I couldn’t sleep well last night.

Perhaps it was the lack of exercise for three days in a row after the triathlon last weekend that had my feet itching or perhaps it may have been my excitement stemming from committing to run the easy leg of the Blue Ridge Relay with Alex and 4 other runners.  It is a 208 mile race that will take 30 hours or so to complete.  And I say easy leg because I don’t think I could do the harder legs.  My leg will consist of 6 different runs over the 30 hour timeframe that will total more than 25 miles.  Call me crazy, but I can’t wait.  It is also the weekend before a triathlon I already have scheduled, so it should be an interesting couple of weeks.

So at around 2:45 this morning, I woke up and could not get back to sleep.  I tried, but when I decided it wasn’t going to happen, what else is a guy to do but run?

I fiddled with my IPod a bit to get it to work, but failed.  I think the battery is having some issues.  Oh well.  So I loaded the last Podcast of the Freeway to 10K mix onto Jenn’s IPod and got dressed.  I leashed up Althea, let Diego come in the house so he could do something special too and set out.

The temperature was comfortable in the dark morning and I was feeling good.  Traffic was very light so there were no issues with the cars.  I did a sort of out and back for a total of 7.1 miles.  I was very pleased with my pace of 9:24 minutes per mile.  See the stats here.

On the cool down walk back to the house I suddenly realized something was wrong.  MY NIPPLES ARE ON FIRE!  I have heard guys talk about running marathons with band aids on their nipples to keep them from chaffing, but I didn’t realize it could happen after just 7 miles.  But it did.  I feel like I have sort of graduated the next step in my running career now that I have sore nipples.  Today it has been a sort of reminder that I went the distance this morning.  I was lucky enough to not have a severe case; I have heard they can get so bad they bleed.  I have nothing like that and I don’t want to know what that feels like.  I will plan to use some Aquaphor (thanks Jeff!) or something before I go out running in the future!

Very Early Morning

After a day off yesterday, apparently my body was ready to get moving.  At around 2:45 this morning, I was wide awake.  I had planned on waking up at 4:30 and then go for a run, back home to shower then bike to work.  I stayed in bed trying to get back to sleep and realized a little after 3:00 that it wasn’t going to work.  I decided I had three options: stay in bed awake, watch some TV or go ahead for the run.  I guess the inner triathlete in me said, “RUN!”  So I did.

I took my time (I had plenty after all!) going to the bathroom, getting dressed and stretching.  I leashed up Althea, said goodbye to Diego and we were off.  I had to run without the IPod this morning as I wanted to, due to some kind of glitch with it.  I think the battery is dead.  Melissa and I have debated several times over whether or not running with music or running without so you can hear the birds, your breathing, etc. is better.  I probably would have always run with music except that it is illegal in competition at triathlons.  Once I started running without, I realized there are some benefits, but I do still enjoy the music especially when all I expected to hear at 4:00 AM was the occasional car and barking dogs.

We ended up running to the Peach Stand (if you know Fort Mill, you should know where that is) and back.  Total mileage was 6.2 miles.  I did it at a steady pace of just over 10 minute miles and it felt good.

The only issues I had again related to the lack of sidewalks along Doby’s Bridge Rd.  It must have been a new moon for where there were no street lights or cars around I could not see a thing.  Add to that a car coming at me with its bright lights on and I was perfectly blinded.  I felt like that deer must feel when it encounters such a car.  Add more to that a roadway that has no shoulder whatsoever and a 4 inch drop from the asphalt to the dirt and you have me running down the road with a car coming (I got over a bit in case they weren’t paying attention) and I drop off the edge.  I rolled my left ankle a good bit, but luckily I didn’t hurt anything.  I yelled out a few choice words regarding the lack of sidewalks and I hope there were no kids awake around that area.  I need to see what it would take for the city to put some in.  Anybody have any ideas?

Here are the stats.

I got back home a little after 5:00 and just took my time cooling off and cleaning up.  I showered, went to the bathroom again and got dressed for the ride to work.

The ride in was uneventful, thankfully, and the weather was actually quite nice.  I will add more on the ride home, including the usual stats as well at a later time.

It’s too bad I have to work late tonight or this would be shaping up to be a perfect day!

Happy Father’s Day

I had every reason to skip my workouts this weekend.  Yesterday, I travelled to Greenville, SC with Mia, my Dad and Melissa to visit Jenny and Chuck.  We left pretty much first thing in the morning and I let Jenn get a run in before we left.  Melissa and I had tentatively planned to run while we were in Greenville, but the temperature was to flirt with 100 degrees and it would be the hottest part of the day when we would have had time to run – nap time.  Plus, Chuck had said he wanted to get a round of disc golf in with me and after not playing for several months, I was looking forward to that.

We ended up going to play the game of disc golf since it was so hot.  It was a lot of fun and I shot 12 over and Chuck (semi-professional if you ask me) shot 6 under.  Now you may say 12 over is really bad, but I haven’t thrown a disc in 3 months and even then I usually was happy with bogey golf, or 18 over playing 18 holes.  So I was pleased with a 12 over score, especially since this is rated an “intermediate-advanced level course” and a “difficult par 54″ on the PDGA website.  We played at Century Park Disc Golf Course in Greer, SC.  I greatly enjoyed the course and would recommend it to anyone in the area.

Mia and I didn’t get back home until about 7:00, just in time to see Sadie before she went to bed.  We couldn’t get Mia to sleep until a little after 9:oo as she was wound up from the busy day.  I was too tired after all of that to do anything but sit and watch some TV.

Jenn had to work 12 hours on Sunday, so she went to bed early.  I stayed up just a little bit and watched some of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, as aired on PBS a few months ago.  I decided that I would wake up early enough to get a run in before Jenn had to leave for work at 6:00.  This meant I had to wake up at 4:45 at the latest to do that.  I wanted to run 6 miles and knew that I would need at least 1:15 to get ready and run that distance.  So I went to bed.

I woke up at about 4:50 and threw on clothes, stretched, went to the bathroom and leashed up Althea.  We told Diego goodbye and we headed out.  I decided that since there was not much traffic at 5:00 on Sunday morning that we would run down the normally busy road that has no sidewalks (seriously, come on Town of Fort Mill, get with the program and put sidewalks and bike lanes in!) and run through the town.  It seems that the majority of cars that are out this early on Sundays are police officers.  At least I could wave one down if I had a problem!

We turned around at about 5:30 because I knew I had to be back by 6:00 so Jenn could leave for work.  This cut the distance to 5 miles, but it still felt great and around mile 4 I felt the “runner’s high” but it didn’t last very long.  Those of you that have run a good bit probably know what I am talking about.  It is kind of a fuzzy feeling, but I like the feeling and I take it as my body’s way of saying, “thanks for all the exercise, now I can live a little longer!”

Here are the stats as recorded by the Forerunner GPS.

Now I get to enjoy my Father’s Day with my two girls.  I only wish that I didn’t have to work tomorrow and that Jenn could spend the day with us too.  Oh well, not everything is perfect, but it is close.

Another Humid Morning

I was able to force myself out of bed at 5:00 again this morning.  I was disappointed in this because I needed to get up no later than 4:45 to get the run in that I wanted to.  My wife had to leave the house for work at 5:55, so I needed to be back home by then in case the girls woke up.

I did my usual routine: toilet, clothes, shoes, stretch.  Then I went to see the dogs and let Diego in the house and got the leash on Althea.  This always takes longer than you would think.  After a 5 minute warm up walk, I started running at 5:31.  This meant it was going to be a shorter run than I wanted.  So I decided to try to run a fast pace.

The idea was all well and good, but then I started to think about the weather man I heard on TV while I was stretching.  “It is already warm at 71 degrees and it is much more humid than this time yesterday.  When you walk outside this morning it will be like a slap in the face.”  I thought, “shit, just what I need!”

So I decided to do the best with what I had and I ran 2.35 miles in about 21 minutes.  That comes to a pace of 8:57/mile.  Not a bad pace, but certainly not my best.  You can see all the stats here.

I will attempt the swim at 5:30 tomorrow morning and then bike to/from work.  I am looking forward to that.  This Saturday Mia and I are traveling with my dad and Melissa to see our sister, Jenny, and her husband, Chuck.  I am super excited about this because I haven’t seen my dad in quite some time (my parents live in Dallas, TX) and it has been several weeks since I have seen Jenny and Chuck.

Jenny is 8 months pregnant and completed her first marathon with Chuck last December (while she was pregnant by the way).  We ran in a race together with Melissa and although she was pregnant she still smoked us.  See Melissa’s blog post about that race here.  I wonder if I could beat her now?  She is the one who used to trick me into exercising with her when we were kids.  “Come on, race me!  I will give you a head start and a sticker when we finish!”  She would still beat me and I think you owe me some stickers Jenny.  It wasn’t until high school when I started running track that I could beat her at a short sprint.  By this time she was running much farther than me, but I have to hold on to something, right?  Maybe we can run a marathon (or at least the Cooper River Bridge run 10K) together next year and I can see how far I’ve come.  Melissa, Jenny how about a little sibling rivalry next year?

Humid (Sweaty) Run

I was able to drag myself out of bed at 5:15 this morning and went for a run.  I put the leash on Althea and told Diego we would be back soon.  I ran out of the neighborhood, down the half mile long sidewalk (why are there not more sidewalks?) and then ran back into the neighborhood.  My wife ran into a nearby subdivision and she said it was nice with a little hill, so I decided to see what it was about.  It was a simple neighborhood with huge houses.  There were no sidewalks there, but at this hour it was not busy with cars.  We did pass a guy walking his dog with no leash and I grew worried, but the dog didn’t seem to even notice us.  Either that or he (10 pounds of dog, if that) didn’t want anything to do with my 70 pound German Shepherd/Husky mix.

We finished the run by heading back into my neighborhood and took a nice 1 mile or so cool down walk.  This is about the time I realize that my shirt was completely soaked with sweat.  I had noticed that I had to keep wiping my brow to keep the sweat out of my eyes, but I thought that was because I decided to leave my hat at home.  Apparently it was close to 100% humidity and I could tell now.

After a near hit with someone backing out of their driveway and not paying attention to the guy walking his dog, we just headed back home.  Another 3.1 miles down.  I will add the stats at a later time as apparently Garmin is having some issues with their system.  Here it is.

I will try to get a swim in sometime, but it is hard as always because I have to work late tonight :( and tomorrow my wife is working 12 hours.  I will play it by ear.
