It’s Hard to Run When it’s Hot

I woke up this morning after a good long holiday weekend and I did not want to get going.  I had planned a pool swim this morning before work and a 5K run at lunchtime.  I stayed in bed a few minutes trying to convince myself to get up, kind of a body vs. mind situation.  Finally the mind won and I got up.  Got to the pool and had a good swim.  Now off to work.

Going back to work after a normal weekend is tough.  After a long holiday weekend, mine was 4 days, is just cruel.  But it has to be done.  Going through 74 e-mails and 6 voicemails takes some time, but I am extremely glad it was not the other way around.  I am glad that people seem to get the hint that e-mail is a much more efficient way to communicate when you can’t do so face to face.

Lunch time.  Time to RUN!  I am excited that the rain has held off.  They were calling for scattered thunder storms, but they seem to have waited for me to get my run in.  I look out of my window and see that there are many clouds in the sky, but the sun is out too, so I decide to take my hat and sunglasses.  I did not realize until I got outside that it was already 90 degrees!  I warm up (did not take long) and start to run.  Feeling pretty darn good for the first mile or so and I wonder if I can beat my personal best that I set a week ago.  Then it hits me.  I feel like my head is going to explode from my boiling blood.  Sorry to be graphic, but that’s how it felt!  I have to ease back a bit, so I walk.  Then I realize that without the run speed, it feels even hotter.  Then I wonder why the hell the clouds are seemingly avoiding blocking the sun from penetrating my back and head.  No lie, with a sky full of those fluffy clouds, not once during my run did one float in front of the sun and give me a break.  I started off thinking the weather and Mother Nature were on my side only to have them kick my tail.  See the stats here.

I did not reach 3.1 miles because I was running out of time and I still had to eat something for lunch.  I think my days of getting a run in at lunch might be coming to an end.  At least during the warm weather anyway.  Maybe Thursday I will run after work instead of at lunch.  That and Saturday’s 5 mile trail race should boost my running!

Some Dogs Just Want to Stay Home

I travelled with my wife, Jenn and our two daughters, Mia and Sadie, to my in laws mountain house in Saluda, NC this weekend.  We decided to take our two dogs, Diego and Althea along with us so they could enjoy the trip as well.

We travelled on Friday and on Saturday morning, I decided to get a training run in to stay active and get some hill work in that I knew would be challenging, but beneficial.  I knew I would take Althea who accompanied me on my first attempt at half marathon distance.  I am sure she would have kept going if I had.  I decided at the last minute to take Diego as well so he would not feel left out.

Well, we started with a 5 minute warm up walk at a brisk pace.  Then when I started to run things were going well, that is for 3 minutes.  Then, all of a sudden, I have Althea on my left, pulling me forward and Diego on my right, pulling me backward!  I stopped to check to make sure he wasn’t hurt.  He wasn’t.  We walked for a bit and I tried running again.  Immediately, he started pulling me back again!  Not wanting to hurt him, we walked the rest of the way home and I decided that if it’s going to be more of a walk, Diego would rather just stay home.  And that’s okay.  Althea loves to run and I love to take her because it makes her a better dog at home.  Diego doesn’t have that problem, so the occasional walk seems to be just fine for him.

You can see the stats here, but don’t expect to be impressed!

Bad Morning, Good Afternoon

I had trouble waking up yesterday morning and had the same problem today.  I made the decision last night to stay up and watch the end of the Yankees/Twins game on TV since I don’t get to watch many games, and I could not get myself up when the alarm went off at 4:50.  So it was no swim this morning, which bummed me out.  I was pretty disappointed in myself, which is probably why I was motivated to run a personal record for 5K distance at lunch.  I was determined to get something good out of the day!  I ran 3.11 miles in 25:04:21!  That comes to 8:04/mile.  My previous personal best was 26:55 at the Concord Bunny Run, which is about 8:40/mile.  I am super excited about that.  So I guess this is one of those days where I was down, but found a way to pick myself up.  Tomorrow morning I will go to the pool!

I also need to get a bike in, but may not get to that until Thursday.  We are going to the cabin in Saluda, NC this weekend, so it will be a good chance for some hill workouts!

I have also been thinking about the training for my first Olympic distance triathlon on 8/2/09, Assault on Cherokee.  I think I will follow this plan.  It is a 10 week plan, so this week is technically week 1.  I missed the swim this morning, but I can get back on track!

Monday Mornings Are Tough

Sometimes it is hard to just get out of bed.  Especially when it is cooler than normal like it was this morning.  I enjoy the cool weather, but also enjoy snuggling in the bed with my wife when it is cool outside.  Those moments are the ones that I never want to end.  Then the alarm goes off – again.  I have already hit snooze about 3 or 4 times and now I have to get up.  Bummer.  But then once I get going and I start to wake up, it is all good.  Then I get to work and on Mondays especially, all I want to do is go back home and see my girls!

As far as training goes, today is an off day.  I figure Mondays are hard enough as it is, at least I can rest a bit physically while mentally it is tough.   Tomorrow morning I will get back to the pool and continue to work on my stroke so I can feel comfortable swimming.  I have had a few short glimpses of, “oh, that feels right!”, but I want that to be consistent.

Sunday Morning Workout

I ran 13.1 miles (half marathon distance) this morning for the first time.  I did it with my dog, Althea and my sister, Melissa.  I am super excited and can’t wait to go farther!  I never thought for a second that I would be as excited about running as I am right now.  And it seems to be growing as I up the distance.

Check out the run here.

Rewind about a year.  My brother in law, Chuck, and my sister, Jenny, were about to start training for a marathon.  Whenever the topic of running came up, I was always the guy who said, “You know, I ran 2 miles once.  And hated every step.”  That is truly how I felt.  I ran track in high school, just because that was the only team I could get on and the coaches trained us so hard that it took every ounce of fun out of it.  I compare that to reading.  When you are in school, the teachers have you read these “classics” for the curriculum.  I am sure these are great works of literature, but if you aren’t interested in reading that (what typical high school kid is), then you won’t get what the author intended its readership to get.  This is why I hated to read until a few years ago when I actually read something I enjoyed.  Running is a lot like that.  When you do it for fun and exercise, and you see improvements and results, then it is fun.  Not being able to walk up the stairs after track practice is not fun.

I was the guy who commented on my sister’s blog last April when she said that “Next year, I pledge to run the whole way – not walk! – and do it in less than an hour. Oh, and we’re dragging my brother along too, whether he knows it or not …” and I commented, “Wait a second… don’t you guys know that I HATE running???”  Read it here for proof!

So, I now have to eat crow.  I was completely wrong in my opinion of running.  It is hard at times, yes, but when you do it because you want to get into shape and improve your health and fitness, it can be wonderful!

My next event is the Lake Wylie Splash Dash 10K.  My goal will be to complete in less than 1 hour.  You may think “10K, in 1 hour?  That’s not that fast.”  But this course is very hilly, so I will be happy with 1 hour!  Until then, I need more workouts.  It is back to swimming this week after taking a week off after the triathlon.

Introduction

So I decided to start a blog.  I have been thinking about doing it for a couple of months now and finally decided that I should.  Mainly for myself to look back at in the years to come, but if someone else enjoys reading it too, great!  Anyway, I guess I will tell you a little about myself.  My name is Kevin and I am 25 years old.  I live in Fort Mill, SC and work in Rock Hill, SC as a loan officer at a credit union.  I have a beautiful wife, Jenn and two adorable girls.  Mia is 2 years old and Sadie is 8 months.  I recently changed my lifestyle dramatically for the better and started this blog to write about that and whatever else happens to come across my mind.

It all started when I bought a Wii for myself and a Wii fit for my wife last Christmas.  We first did the Wii fit on 12/30/08 and although I knew I was not in the best of shape, what it told me made me make a life changing decision.  I weighed 194.2 pounds and was well into the “overweight” classification.  After not weighing myself in quite some time, I thought I was maybe 175 or 180, but I knew I should weigh about 150.  I had recently made several weak attempts at starting a running routine, but after a week I would lose motivation.  194.2 is the number that finally motivated me.  I did not want to be 200 pounds.  So I started running a week later (I still wanted to enjoy my New Year’s Eve festivities, so I put it off a bit).

I started a new diet plan that my boss worked up for Crystal (a co-worker) and her husband that focuses on increasing protein intake and reducing fat and sodium.  It also focuses on healthy, natural foods like fruits and vegetables instead of processed foods.  If anyone would like the plan, e-mail me!

I started running using an IPod podcast called podrunner intervals First Day to 5K with an end goal of being able to run 5km or 3.1 miles.  It is a 10 week program that progressively increases your running time and distance.  After 8 weeks, I ran my first official 5K, The Frosty 5K on 2/28/09 at the McMullen Creek greenway in Charlotte, NC.  I finished in a little over 32 minutes and I had the best feeling in the world after finishing!  I was definitely hooked.  I have run in several 5Ks since and have improved my time with each one.  My PR is 26:55 on 4/11/09 in Concord, NC at the Bunny Run.

Finishing my first 5K

Finishing my first 5K

The most fun I have had at a race is definitely at the Terrapin Beer 5K Plus one Mile (4.1 miles).  The race was in Athens, GA on 4/18/09 and sponsored by the local brewery and it started at 4:00PM.  After the race, you collect the beer glass they give you and you can sample up to 8 of their finest products.  My sister had the great idea to dress up for this event to have even more fun, so I ran the 4.1 miles in a beer helmet with two (empty) cans of PBR.  Terrapin only bottles in glass and I wasn’t about to run with glass bottles on my head!  To see some photos from this event and read what Melissa has to say, see her blog post.

I took off in another direction in March when my brother in law, Alex, said that I should do a triathlon.  He has been doing them for years and he convinced me to go to the local pool and just jump in a see if you can swim 500 yards, or 20 lengths of a 25 yard pool (the distance of the swim leg of the triathlon, Tri the Rock, he was planning to do on 5/9/09).  I went and swam about 2 lengths freestyle before I had to turn over on my back to breathe!  I e-mailed him that day and asked if you had to swim the whole thing freestyle or if it mattered.  He replied saying “you could doggie paddle the whole way if you wanted to, but with practice, you’ll get better.”  So I signed up!  I trained for about 10 weeks of swimming twice a week, biking twice a week and running twice a week.  Each Monday was a rest day.  I enjoyed the training so much that I plan to keep doing this until I can’t for some reason.  I made a new life goal to complete a full distance Ironman.  Swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run a marathon, 26.2 miles.  140.6 miles in all.  10-15 hours of constant exercise.  My wife thinks I am crazy, but she is supportive.

It is now 5/14/09 and I have completed my first triathlon and it was incredible.  It was even better than the first 5K.  The feeling makes you feel like you can do anything you want if you are willing to put in the time, which is absolutely true.  I finished the 500 yard swim, 16 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run in a little over 1 hour 32 minutes.  My goal was to finish period, but I did want to finish in less than 1.5 hours.  I came close, and I am happy with that because I was pretty sick the day before.

On the run leg of my first triathlon

On the run leg of my first triathlon

With all of this exercise and diet changes, I have managed to lose 34.7 pounds.  I am at 159.5 now and about 11 pounds from my “ideal” weight.  Apparently it really is what they have been saying all those years; that diet and exercise are the keys to being healthy.

My next event is a 10K in Lake Wylie, the Splash Dash on 6/13/09.  My sister, Melissa, and I went and ran the hilly course about 2 weeks ago and it is challenging, but that’s the point, right?

I will then plan another triathlon that includes an open water swim, probably the Cane Creek Triathlon on 9/19/09.  And if the running continues to feel right, and I can comfortably run 13.1 miles by 7/31/09, I will sign up for the Thunder Road Marathon in Charlotte on 12/12/09.  Again, my wife thinks I am crazy, but I know I can do it if I do it smart.  Then, next year I will plan to do an Olympic distance triathlon in the spring and a half Ironman in the fall.  Then I will go for the big fish: a full distance Ironman in 2011.  This blog will chronicle the journey.
